Should we protect cultural diversity like we do biodiversity?
I do not think cultural diversity should be treated like biodiversity. Biodiversity needs to be regulated and preserved and conserved in order for continued survival of mankind. If mankind has gotten to a point where we have been so unsustainable, that we’ve exhausted our globes vital resources cultural diversity won’t even matter. As we have already learned, species that are introduced into a new habitat has the potential to devastate the local bio diversity but that is no longer true for humans.
The topic of Government working to protect cultural diversity is a loaded gun. If by cultural diversity we are talking about those 100 uncontacted indigenous tribes left in the world, there are already laws protecting those people and their habitats. If by protecting cultural diversity we prevent religious groups from entering, stripping many groups of their language, and dress then I am on board with protecting cultural diversity. But who am I to say if an indigenous tribe member decides that they want an opportunity for medicine that will extend their life span, no one can force him to teach his children his language?
Thanks to globalization due to advances in technology humans are the least diverse than we have ever been. That’s not a bad thing. People can mix and get to know other and flourish. For the most part, human enjoy blending and mixing and sharing and when there is an opportunity we tend to seek each other out. Cultural heritage is important but we have to accept this is a modern world. A modern world doesn’t mean cultural diversity is lost and it doesn’t mean that different cultures will become the same as one another, nor should we believe that they will unify simply because of frequent interaction between them.
So I say although at one time cultural and bio diversity may have once been one in the same, it is no longer true. Some languages over time become extinct but humans have ways of recording language, and history, neither of which affects our survival. We as a population need to focus on biodiversity because once lost, we will all perish.
